Rust Revisited…

Niki Rowland GoGo Getaway Rust Paste

Hey there, GoGo fans, Niki here with you today with my take on Terri’s Rust Paste class that she taught at March 2017 GoGo Getaway.

I have to admit that brown is absolutely not my favourite colour to use when scrapbooking so using Rust Paste was a bit of a challenge for me – how to create a light and airy layout but also incorporate rust…

So I chose a light background and added beautiful vintage looking flowers from the Heidi Swapp Magnolia Jane collection and My Minds Eye In Bloom. I then added the Rust Paste (which is a very clever product by the way!) to a few leaves and some other small embellishments.

The Rust Paste has three different colours – brown, orange and yellow. These really aren’t my colours so I set about adding a pink tinge to my paste by mixing in a little bit of Heidi Swapp Pink Texture paste. This was subtle but made me happier with the colour and I felt it went really nicely with the flowers.

Once dry, I used my fingertip and added a small amount of mint coloured mousse – this worked really well as the mousse clung to the textured part of the leaves, the texture created by the rust paste, so there are also some mint highlights on my leaves.

Once they were completely dry, I tucked my leaves into my flowers and I am super pleased with the result. The photo used shows a classic book that I have been reading to my daughter so this vintage feel layout works well with the theme of the photograph.

To prove that I am in fact human and not a scrapbooking-machine which many people have described me as (!), I have a funny story about how this layout came together. I was working on this layout with a group of friends and I had struggled a little with using the rust paste, and the I just couldn’t get the elements on my layout arranged in a way that I was happy with. After shuffling it all around 20 times and spending rather a lot of time on it, we realised that the friend sat opposite me was having a similar problem with the layout she was working on…so we swapped!! Ruth worked on my layout and I worked on hers! We got the basics arranged and stuck down and then swapped back to finish off the embellishing! So this layout was actually a joint effort – thank you Ruth lol

I hope I’ve inspired you to try products that might be out of your comfort zone. The Rust Paste (by Prima) is a really effective product and I love the effect. It is also very easy to use so give it a go, or share any layouts you have made using it over on the GoGo Getaway Facebook group, I would really love to see them.

Happy scrapping xx
